gardenia

In honor of Lei Day (which is how Hawaiians celebrate May Day). I'm posting about the most wonderful little jewel of the natural world that blooms in early spring, the gardenia blossom. I don't think I'd ever even seen one before coming here, and the blossom is a little humble in it's appearance (compared to the bigger, more colorful blooms of the island).

But the flower is really beautiful, just rich little creamy petals and the scent is incredible. Such a delicate floral... Oh little gardenia I'm so happy I found you this May.

hi you -
i love gardenias, too - when i was in san francisco a few winters ago, there were gardenia corsages for sale all over union square... it was such a lovely, old fashioned thing to sell, i had to get one to wear all over the city all day long. i felt so glamourous! my neighbor grows them; i love them so much that i always want to touch them, which reminds me of being a little girl and my mother forbidding me since they brown at a touch... oh, the smell is so delicious. i'm so glad you've discovered them!

have you learned to make leis yet? i hope all is well for you in hanalei!

PS we might be coming to Maui soon, in august!
